Each one of them, including the villains, are deeply established and have some decent layers of complexity. The synopsis describes this book pretty well so I'll mention a few other things: I LOVED this twisted and intriguing story! There are two instances where someone insinuates that a character is gay (he is not).

Other: a mention of testicles, mention of a girl in a skimpy bikini, mentions of extremities, a joke about making his robe color invisible, walking up the steps naked. Language: There are several occasions where cuss words are used. Romance: mentions of hormones, mentions of attractions, a kiss, multiple occasions of innuendo, talk about how a character tried to “climb into his bed and be with him” but the other character wakes up and thinks she was trying to kill him. Burning, decapitation, mass murder, and just about anything you could think of. Gun violence, stabbing, poisoning, breaking spines, snapping necks so far as to have the head turn and the lifeless eyes stare back. ‘now get lost.’”Īs for the content in this book, it was relatively mild. I love the development between the two main characters, even through the tough times.

There were parts were there was some humor to make light of the situation, but not in a way that was out of place. I fell in love with certain characters and despised others. I love it when books have foreshadowing because there little subtle hints towards the bigger picture. There was a lot of foreshadowing that you don’t understand until after the fact. The world was beautifully built and wonderfully described. So much happens in this book, so much growth from the first encounter with Citra and Rowan to the very last page. Citra and Rowan are chosen to become scythes because they don’t want to be a scythe, and that makes them perfect. Scythes have one job, and that is to kill. To combat with over population, the Scythedom was created. Everyone has a good life, a satisfying life. So this book is set in a world where people don’t die, you become deadish, because immediately upon the stopping of your heart, you are taken to a revival center and brought back to life. I REALLY enjoyed this book! If you were to explain this book to someone, it might not sound like there cup of tea. I heard so many people raving about this book and I just had to see what all the fuss was about! Let me see if I can write a review for this book that doesn’t sound like a bunch of nonsense. This book had the perfect ending.I cannot WAIT for book 2.~SATRecommend to: YA fantasy readers interested in scythes/grim reaper/discussions about death and life.Favorite Quote: "Hope in the shadow of fear is the world’s most powerful motivator." (8)Favorite Word: Metallurgy: the branch of science and technology concerned with the properties of metals and their production and purification: There was metallurgy as if applies to weapons, the philosophy of mortality, the psychology of immortality, and the literature of the Scythedom, from poetry to the wisdom found in famous scythes’ journals. But their relationship also didn’t take center stage, which I appreciated. It felt a little forced they could’ve easily gone through the same motions of the book with just a powerful friendship.

The only tiff I would talk about is the “romance” between the Rowan and Citra. There are so many ethical discussions and miniature stories threaded throughout a larger, much more complicated work that I could barely put it down. I would tell you more about the plot, but I don’t want to spoil the read for anyone. This book is brilliant, morbid, hilarious, and emotional. (So famous, there are even trading cards.) After two frightening encounters, Citra and Rowan are taken in as Scythe Faraday’s apprentices. They only have ten rules to abide by, and they are famous wherever they go. They are people, just like anyone else, until they are hired to deal out death to those they choose to die-however which way they feel necessary. But overpopulation needs to be controlled. All of that is solved-and even if you’re in an accident that should kill you, you are revived. Neither does abject poverty or war or starvation or diseases. In the future, death no longer happens due to advanced technology. My favorite book of the year so far has officially been handed to Scythe. This was my first Shusterman novel, and I was not disappointed, not at all.
